Ms. Mayela
Originally from Monterrey, Mexico, Mayela Mathews has made her home in Tallahassee since 1995. Before she came to the United States she received her training in rhythmic gymnastics at the Elite Gymnastics Academy in Monterrey, Mexico. She was a competitive level gymnast and won several national level competitions in Mexico.
She later pursued dance and received her early dance training at Miguel Zagahún Dance Academy. Once she came to Tallahassee, she continued her dance training at the Florida State University Department of Dance. Mayela received her BA in Dance and a second degree, BA in Child Development, from Florida State University.
In addition to her studies, she was also an accomplished performer in the world renown FSU "Flying High" Circus. While in Mexico she danced in many productions with well-known choreographer Miguel Zagahún. She danced in several more productions with the FSU Department of Dance including Aqueous Myth: Tales of a Water Planet premiered by its artistic director Tim Glenn.
Mayela has taught and coached jazz, ballet, contemporary dance and rhythmic gymnastics throughout her life. She has choreographed many routines for dancers and gymnasts. She opened up her rhythmic gymnastics program here in Tallahassee in 2014. She has been dedicating her time teaching the beautiful sport of rhythmic gymnastics to kids in Tallahassee ever since. She has been coaching competitive rhythmic gymnastics since 2016 and teaching beginner students in her recreational program for the last 10 years.
Mayela is the director and head coach of her Rhythmic program- Mayela Rhythmic. She is a professional member/coach and club member of USA Gymnastics.
Mayela is happily married and is a proud mother of three beautiful children, with a girl and twin boys. She loves teaching Rhythmic Gymnastics!
